SMEC annually trains staff members from each of its seven member districts in restrictive procedures. The most important part of this training is the de-escalation skills that must be exhausted prior to the use of any safety intervention.
In the event of restrictive procedures, I developed this SMEC specific training guide which details mandated policies and procedures regarding documentation and communication of the critical incident. In addition, I debrief and document each incident on behalf of SMEC for the seven districts, and attend the monthly District Oversight Committee meeting as the behavior specialist member.

School emergency or crisis plans have evolved in recent decades from inclement weather plans to active shooter scenarios. In response increasing incidents of violence in schools, emergency planning has become a top priority, highly scrutinized, and involving additional stakeholder input and consultation with outside safety and law enforcement entities.
Under greater scrutiny is also student discipline in relation to school violence. All of these considerations involve largely unforeseeable situations and the related issues of law, liability, due process, require discernment and proactive prevention and planning.
