A key part of a school also being part of the community is finding opportunities to work together to meet an overlapping need. SMEC authored and was rewarded a grant to fund a SMEC Education Center facility expansion which addressed a district need for additional space for students and staff, as well as a community need for storm shelter, fitness/gym facility, and community education classroom space.
Annually, SMEC provides a three-week long SMEC Academy for all students, K-5, in member districts. As a member of the SMEC Academy planning team, I was able to assist with course planning, budget and funding, registration and served as building administrator for the final week of the program. In addition, I developed the SMEC Academy pamphlet for disbursement by member districts. In September of this year, SMEC was recognized by Commissioner Willie Jett for this successful summer programming.
In an effort to increase awareness and understanding of SMEC's mission and purpose in member district communities, my Behavior Program Departmental Action Plan incorporates a goal for the implementation of a community outreach and communication plan regarding SMEC students/ programming, member district specific needs assessments, and programming descriptions.
