The Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment course final project allowed students an opportunity to gather, analyze, interpret, and apply data meaningfully for a school district. Using student learning data, learning needs, development of SMART goals this presentation details "Where we are", "Where we want to go", and "How we get there" to increase K-12 literacy proficiency at Southland Public Schools, a SMEC member district and school of attendance for my own 3rd grader and 7th grader.
As Department Lead of the Success programs, I developed rolling agendas which are attached to both bi-weekly site meetings and weekly department meetings, available in every calendar invitation to all stakeholders. Each site-specific agenda is editable and has a section specifically for staff to add comments/notes regarding implementation of the new SEL curriculum. In addition, each site-specific agenda includes a page specific to student IEP goals, both instruction and assessment.
Behavior concerns and student needs continue to increase. In response to this reality and what was a stagnant waitlist during the 2024-2025 school year, SMEC worked to add locations for the Success level III EBD programs over the 2025 summer. As Department Lead, this meant careful assessment of staff, material, and time needs. Specifically, analysis of staff experience/aptitude, budget reallocation considering five Success program locations instead of two, and careful schedule coordination with related service providers and the mental health Connections Department. Essential to this process was staff input throughout.
